Milford High School’s Travel Fair – A Huge Success!

Last Wednesday, May 6th, Atlas Travel partnered with the Milford High School’s Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) program to put together a Vacation Travel Fair – a project which culminated the experiences of these intrepid young travel professionals throughout the program’s inaugural year. The event was an astounding success, both in attendance and in educational merit, and we couldn’t be more proud of these students.

The MHS HTM Program Students and Instructors

During the Travel Fair, the students were partnered, and presented alongside some of the biggest names in leisure travel. As attendees perused the special travel deals, and asked questions about specific sailings and destinations, the students offered answers, provided event support, and directed traffic on the show floor. It was a live lesson in hospitality and event planning, and the students excelled at it.

“Over the course of the year, the HTM students worked with vendor partners, interned at the DoubleTree by Hilton, received travel agent training with Atlas and Sabre, and pulled everything together with this Travel Fair. It was just the tip of the Hospitality iceberg, but these experiences are invaluable,” said Karen McCrink, Director of Leisure Services, and one of the biggest proponents of the program here at Atlas. “The Travel Fair went off without a hitch, and everyone in attendance had the same feeling – we were all very impressed with the students, and the event.”

The students, of course, are already gearing up for next year, Katie Maloney, Coordinator of the HTM program at the Milford High School noted: “The students were all on the same page – ‘What’s next?!’ The Travel Fair was like opening presents on Christmas morning for them, and now that it’s over for the summer, they’re a little disappointed that they can’t continue the program’s momentum.”

Though the Hospitality & Tourism Management students have wrapped up their hospitality requirements for the school year, there’s plenty more news to come in the future, as the Milford High School continues to develop and promote this unique program. We’re very excited to watch the curriculum grow, and can’t wait to see next year’s new and returning students!

We would also like to extend a warm ‘thank you’ to each of the vacation vendor partners who made the Travel Fair possible – including: Celebrity Cruises, Classic Vacations, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Delta Vacations, Globus, Norwegian, Azamara, Princess Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Regent, Holland America Line, Star Clippers, Travel Impressions, CIE Tours, and DoubleTree by Hilton – and to everyone who attended the fair on Wednesday night.

Thank you!

Jennifer Vecchi, Dir. MICE, on the Benefits of eRFPs

By Jennifer Vecchi
Director, Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events at Atlas Travel

We were pleased to get coverage recently in The Meeting Magazine, which covered the efficacy of electronic RFPs for hotel services in the meetings and events industry. It gave me an opportunity to share Atlas Travel’s experience with this technology and I thought it would be a good time to update you on what we are doing in this arena.

We are gradually (and carefully) transitioning to eRFPs in our department. Carefully, because not all electronic tools are created equal and we always want to ensure that we are getting the best response rate and qualified information. One of the tasks I’ve put out to our MICE team here at Atlas is to select among different online providers when generating RFPs, to allow us to assess whether there is a different response rate with one format versus another.

There is little doubt that eRFPs can increase productivity. If a meeting planner sends out seven eRFPs on a Tuesday, and is in meetings all day on Wednesday, somebody else on the team can be looking in the system to see if the hotels have responded. They can also send out reminders if the hotels haven’t answered. They can download the RFPs received and scrub them for missing information.

When a planner sends an email to an individual hotel rep, then the response to that email is captive to his/her computer. If the planner is out of the office or busy when the response comes in, then it isn’t answered right away and time is lost. Furthermore, in this scenario, the email recipient has to transfer important information from a hotel’s proposal to an Excel spreadsheet to compare it with that of other hotels.

The other advantage of eRFPs is the access these systems provide to data and performance metrics. We can see how many hours we spend on RFPs and what each hotel’s response rate is. We can track how many RFPs we send to hotels and hotel chains domestically versus internationally, and the number of hotels versus resorts, which is important when negotiating contracts on our client’s behalf.

As a company, we have a focus on leveraging the best of technology without losing the human component. There is no substitute for experience. No platform is a panacea and sometimes a personal touch is key in making the deal, even from the start of the process. So, we will continue to test options, analyze results and always utilize our professional expertise to get the best deals possible.

If you have a meeting, convention or event in the planning stages, feel free to contact me to explore how our department can help you save time and money and produce the best event possible.

Atlas’ Dir., MICE Heads to JFK for a JetBlue “ExperiMINT”

Cockpit

Jennifer gets a special sneak peak at the cockpit!

By Jennifer Vecchi
Director, Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events at Atlas Travel

Forgive the title – with no pun spared in any of the marketing material I was given during my recent trip to JFK, I’d be remised if I didn’t sneak one in myself. A little over a month ago, I was fortunate enough to be invited to a special showing of JetBlue’s new ‘Mint,’ as they put it, ‘a refreshing new take on premium travel.’

Mint is a strikingly modern take on a flight that many may be familiar with – JFK to SFO/LAX, the infamous coast-to-coast, and B6 spared every ounce of ‘premium experience’ that they could muster to make it evident. From their private suites with closing doors; (the only ones currently available in the US market) to their fully lie-flat beds, averaging 6’ 8”; to adjustable seat firmness; massage functions; and shoe storage; it seemed like they’d stolen all the creature comforts you’d want in a hotel, and put them in the sky.

Food

Yum!

Aside from the obvious space and comfort enhancements that come with the flight class, JetBlue also amped up their in-flight menu by introducing a delightful amuse-bouche and cocktail pairing, tapas-style five item meals, and tantalizing desserts, all on a menu curated by Saxon + Parole, a NYC restaurant focusing on sustainable and domestic dining.

JetBlue Mint is available to travelers flying the JFK to LAX or SFO route on the new Airbus A321. I definitely recommend suggesting it to your business class flyers, or trying it out for yourself – I know that I’m already thinking of all the great applications for our meeting and incentives trips!

Atlas Welcomes a New Generation of Hospitality Professionals!

You may have heard about Atlas Travel’s involvement with Milford High School’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Program in our headquarters town of Milford, Massachusetts. We topped off 2014 by hosting the students in the program at our headquarters for a day of education and enrichment.

Atlas Travel Training Manager Guida Botelho was the primary contact for the students and guided them through a tour of Atlas departments and a special training session where they learned the basics of what actually goes on inside a travel management company. They were introduced to everything from MICE to MarCom and the difference between corporate travel and vacation services.

CEO Elaine Osgood spent some time with the group, explaining what her experience had been starting the business as an individual entrepreneur almost 30 years ago. Her stories captured the students’ attention with comments like, “I remember the difficulty of finding our first client. I would go through the phone book and call companies in the area, asking if they needed a travel agency. ‘No thank you!’ they’d say, slamming down the phone… and after each call, I’d tear up a bit, wipe my eyes with a tissue, and call the next number until I finally got a ‘yes.’ That taught me, more than anything else, the value of our clients. They’ve put their trust in us to help their travelers, and to deliver what we say we can. Since those days, my philosophy has always been to take care of every customer, no matter what.”

The students were also introduced to a 2015 project that is designed to give them very real travel experience – the production of a Travel Night that is planned to take place on Wednesday, May 6th at The Doubletree Hotel in Milford. As the program continues, the students will develop a marketing plan, work with vendors like Royal Caribbean and Disney, and coordinate with our Vacations & Cruises department to promote the event, and maybe even sell a few trips!

According to Milford High School Program Coordinator Katie Maloney, the students loved their real-world field trip and several are now very interested in further exploring careers as travel agents, which is music to the ears of Atlas Travel employees. Raising awareness of travel agency careers is at the core of Elaine Osgood’s passion about this program and early indicators are that it is working as planned. Stay tuned for more information about the 2015 Travel Night…we’d love to see you there.

PRIME Sourcing’s Launch Introduces Dynamic Analytics to Travel Industry

MILFORD, MA – December 10, 2014 – Prime Numbers Technology (PNT), an independent provider of data analytics technology and the driving force behind the industry-leading travel analytics and benchmarking product known as PRIME Analytics, has announced the launch of PRIME Sourcing, a new product providing TMCs and corporations with unique and dynamic analytical capabilities to more effectively optimize travel spend and more efficiently conduct sourcing activities.

“The travel industry is severely handcuffed by the inability of technology providers to move away from an archaic, report-centric environment for data analysis,” said Prime Numbers Technology Director of Business Development and Product Marketing, Sean Bloomer. “It is extremely difficult to quickly and easily analyze travel data today because of the restrictive and limited nature of old-school travel reports. The first component of PRIME Sourcing unlocks these restrictions and limitations to provide a dynamic user-centric environment for TMCs or corporations to efficiently analyze data.”

Dynamic Analytics, the first component of PRIME Sourcing, provides TMCs and corporations a unique insight into spend analysis. Users can build interactive and dynamic sets of information, dissect and drill down into market share by carrier or alliance, identify key benchmarks within different levels of a corporate hierarchy, and evaluate hotel spend for RFPs within minutes. Dynamic Analytics streamlines the process of answering the most-posed questions in travel data management surrounding cost, market, and service information and displays information in an intuitive graphical interface that invites users to explore and manipulate their data to uncover valuable insight.

In addition, TMCs can analyze their entire client base’s spend to drastically improve the profitability of their supplier incentive agreements, and interact with their data through both desktop and mobile applications.

PRIME Sourcing’s first component was fully tested by existing PRIME clients via a month long beta. Clients were able to test-drive the functionality and provide input into the future direction of Dynamic Analytics and all future components of PRIME Sourcing such as contract monitoring, scenario modeling, and potential other uses for corporations outside of travel spend. “During the beta, Prime’s development team was very responsive to my input. The TMC and corporate spend analysis features they’ve included completely replace the report-centric tools I’d previously utilized,” said Mimi Cleary, VP, Corporate Services at Atlas Travel – Global Travel Management.

“Our clients were a key part in the development of PRIME Sourcing’s first component. Their feedback allowed our team to deliver a compelling and powerful technology solution to solve one of the industry’s long-standing problems,” added Bloomer. “The PNT team will continue to work with our clients to simplify data analysis so anyone can review complex analytics with ease. This first component of PRIME Sourcing is just the start of more solutions to come.”

Atlas Travel & Technology Group Listed as #8 on Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts

Milford, MA –Elaine Osgood, president and CEO of Atlas Travel & Technology Group (ATTG), punctuates a pivotal year for her company by ranking #8 in the Boston Globe Magazine/Commonwealth Institute Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts. Osgood’s company has made the list each year since 2002, when the key indicator was first tracked to highlight contributions women make to a state economy now ranked the 10th fastest growing in the country.

In addition to breaking into the top 10 of this prestigious list for the first time, Atlas Travel & Technology Group was also ranked on the “Gold Star Innovators,” highlighting 11 companies among the 100 who earned the highest scores for innovations they rolled out in 2013.

“I am so proud to be recognized among the top 10 business women in Massachusetts,” said Osgood, who launched her company in 1986, with no travel industry experience and a small business loan. “To be ranked with 100 women who run prestigious institutions including Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and The Greater Boston Food Bank is such an honor. Attending the breakfast announcing the Top 100 at the Boston Seaport Hotel gave me an even greater appreciation for what women can accomplish and it is exciting to see several of our clients on this list.”

This latest announcement rounds out a triple crown of 2014 business honors for this woman-owned travel and technology company. ATTG was the only travel company ranked on the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO) 2014 list of Top 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Led Companies, where Atlas has appeared for five straight years including this year’s first global ranking. In addition, Atlas was highlighted in February on The Build 100, the inaugural list of “America’s Strongest and Most Strategic Growth Firms,” created by Inc. magazine editors researching 100,000 mid-sized U.S. companies to find the sustained growth champions.

“Our classification as a certified woman-owned business has helped to open doors,” said Osgood, whose company has the Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) certification from the U.S. Small Business Administration and Women’s Business Enterprise (WBEN) certification. “These certifications require a rigorous process and have allowed us to compete for certain corporate and government contracts we would not have had access to without these designations.”

According to Osgood, being recognized as a woman business owner is very gratifying, however being included in rankings of all business leaders in the U.S. and globally proves that women are not only adept at competing with each other, but also consistently contribute to the overall health of the U.S. economy.

During 2014, ATTG has taken its success in the United States and has expanded through its first wholly owned global travel office in London. In addition to geographic expansion, Osgood’s team has also focused on identifying bright, new talent and is offering internship, mentoring and job opportunities to the next generation of travel industry professionals.

“We are also working to foster a culture of corporate responsibility and community service,” said Osgood. “One thing I have learned from other women in business is that we are different in some important ways. In a landscape that is increasingly competitive, one of our strongest assets is the ability to be collaborative. At Atlas, we are always keen on win-win propositions and work to consistently create solutions that will have this outcome.”

Atlas Gives Back: Staff Volunteer at Daily Bread Food Pantry

By Andrew Carriere
Marketing & Communications Coordinator at Atlas Travel & Technology Group

On October 22nd, Atlas Travel’s employee-run Corporate Social Responsibility program, Atlas Reachout, welcomed the start of the autumn season by beginning a series of volunteer efforts throughout our community. Thinking of the winter months just ahead of us, it seemed like the perfect time to pitch in at the Daily Bread Food Pantry in Milford, Massachusetts, the same town where we’re headquartered.

Colleen, Becky, Lori, Maureen and Elizabeth - Volunteers at the Bread Pantry who found time for a quick selfie.

The Daily Bread Food Pantry, originally an organization founded by six churches in the Milford area, services local families in need and is run by volunteers and funded by donations of food and money from the community. The Food Pantry is always in need of volunteers, and some of our agents were in town for training—when our community outreach committee began to ask who might be interested in helping out, a few compassionate individuals stepped up right away.

Our volunteers for the evening: Becky Cole, Supervisor – Corporate Travel, Lori Schlosser, Sr. Corporate Travel Consultant – International Help Desk, and Colleen Brescia, Manager – Lead Generation and Direct Sales got to work immediately. With a quick training session from Elizabeth and Maureen, two of Daily Bread’s seasoned veterans, our trio began filling up bags of groceries for each of the 52 local families who had signed up for assistance.

“It was hard work!” Colleen recalled after the evening was over. “We really worked up a sweat that night. But we were also laughing, hearing stories from Elizabeth and Maureen, and really enjoying ourselves!” All three Atlas employees agreed that the night was a wonderful experience, and highly recommended that their peers join in too:

“It was uplifting – it felt great to help out these families in our community, and it definitely put things into perspective for us,” said Becky, “I can’t wait for the next community event.” Lori found the experience both humbling and gratifying, “It felt good to know that these families wouldn’t have to worry about where their next meal was coming from. I’d volunteer again in a heartbeat.”

Atlas will be pitching in again at The Pantry, on Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout November and December, and our CSR committee is already planning other events for the holiday season, and for 2015, including our 12th annual toy drive for The Santa Foundation, seasonal food drives, and more! Keep checking in for more updates on all of our community initiatives.
